Doreen Cronin is a very busy writer these days. With a newborn and a toddler at home and two new books on the horizon, this much beloved children’s author graciously
lent us a few moments of her time to share with us a few thoughts about where she gets her inspiration, how she works her writer’s craft, and what it takes to live a writer’s life. Born and raised in New York, Cronin once planned to go to law school, but the immediate success of her first children’s book, Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type, propelled her in a different direction, luckily for all of us who love her books. Fans will delight to hear that Dooby Dooby Moo has been released recently, and Diary of a Fly is coming in August 2007.

Conferences are a time to help students make connections not corrections. Good conference questions should help teach the writer and not the writing. In other words, there’s an art to asking the right kinds of questions. When looking over drafts, discussing ideas, asking about drawings, or guiding students to connect to the teaching for the day, we want to ensure they comprehend not only the content of stories they read, but the craft decisions the writers of those stories make.
