Guided Reading and Book Clubs

When forming Guided Reading groups, it is important to keep the needs of each individual reader in mind.  We want to form groups based on students’ needs and reading levels.  Students’ abilities to talk about and to understand texts at a deep level do not always correspond to their reading levels.  For example, we often find students with weak decoding skills (our lowest-leveled readers) able to talk about and share insights about books at a much higher level than some of our higher-leveled readers.

One way teachers have managed this dichotomy is by having Guided Reading groups read books on related themes or genres.  The groups are brought together to talk about the books they are reading, the similarities and related themes.   In this way, teachers are supporting every reader at an individual level and also creating opportunities for all readers to share and learn from each other.

Our Guided Reading & Book Club sets have been created around themes and genres.  These sets are perfect for Guided Reading or Book Clubs.
