DESCRIPTION
The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for English Language Arts and Reading are organized by strands that support the overall development of student readers, writers, and thinkers. In this workshop, teachers will learn how teaching writing and grammar units of study that align to these standards will support their students in their literacy development and create opportunities for reflective learning.

Expository, procedural, and research-based writing encourages students to communicate ideas and information to specific audiences for specific purposes. As teachers navigate through these TEKS-aligned units of study, they will learn about the power of modeling what writers’ roles are during each step of the writing process. Careful attention to this explicit modeling allows teachers to define a text’s central/controlling ideas, supporting information, and clear purpose. In addition, the grammatical structures and conventional choices that need to be included are modeled through the presentation of authentic texts.

Throughout this workshop, teachers will be exposed to strong selections of mentor texts and exemplar pieces and will notice how the intentional teaching that is presented throughout the units allows students to gain a deep understanding of different forms of writing. They will also discover the interactive and collaborative components of workshop teaching.
