This workshop will demonstrate to teachers, literacy coaches, curriculum coordinators, team leaders, and administrators how the Informational Writing and Nonfiction Reading Fundamentals Units of Study are structured as well as introduce them to the essential components: mentor texts, shared texts and primary sources, student outcomes, vocabulary, Interactive Read-Aloud Lessons and Mini-Lessons, independent reading, guided practice, research, writing, and assessment opportunities.
During our Reading/Writing workshops, presenters will discuss and/or model:
- Ways to deepen student understanding of the informational writing text type and the nonfiction reading genre;
- Strategies to define and apply challenging academic and domain-specific vocabulary while reading, speaking, and writing;
- How to use MyVocab to further support students' language acquisition, usage, and development;
- How to assist students with identifying textual evidence to support their thinking and analysis;
- Metacognitive comprehension skills and strategies that readers use and apply before, during, and after reading;
- The importance of highlighting craft examples in writing immersion lessons;
- How to guide students through the stages of the writing process;
- Ways to collect data about students as readers and writers; and
- Environmental supports that foster and enhance independent practice.
