This workshop will help educators better understand the structures of reading and writing workshop, including the architecture of Interactive Read-Alouds, Mini-Lessons, and conferences.
During the morning session on writing workshop, teachers will learn about the benefits of "reading like a writer"–observing how to analyze mentor texts for the purpose of noticing craft techniques. Teachers will also understand the uses for our Writing Fundamentals Units of Study while gaining a deeper appreciation of the stages of the writing process and the qualities of writing that each stage represents.
During the afternoon session on reading workshop, teachers will learn about the rationale of teaching through a genre lens–observing how to view read-aloud lessons through multiple lenses and how to make sure students notice the structures and features of texts. Teachers will also learn how to lift the level of talk during Interactive Read-Alouds and Mini-Lessons. Research tells us that conversation is a strong contributor to enhanced comprehension, so an important outcome of this session will be to deepen teachers’ understanding of the roles of talk, conversational stems, and routines and expectations for discussion.
