Content literacy encompasses the skills and strategies necessary to acquire content knowledge through the exploration of a variety of texts. We teach students not to memorize disconnected facts but to deeply comprehend and synthesize the content.

This workshop includes an introduction to the following topics:
  • Multi-genre approach: selecting a variety of authentic texts to build content knowledge;
  • Getting started: understanding content and disciplinary literacy skills and strategies (NGSS);
  • Developing essential questions for close reading;
  • Setting the stage for learning (classroom environment);
  • Kicking off your content literacy unit;
  • Concept and vocabulary development;
  • Activating and building schema;
  • Gathering and responding to relevant information; and
  • Synthesizing and presenting findings (composing, publishing, and presenting findings in various modes).
